Orders have been issued to bring online news portals and content providers under government control. The latest notification has been issued bringing these under the purview of the Department of Information and Broadcasting. The notification was signed by President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday. Analysts said that many companies like Netflix and Hotstar have come under the control of the central government. Priority has been given to the latest directives in the context of the absence of any laws or independent authority to regulate digital content so far.
Press Council
The print media is currently controlled by the Press Council. News channels are similarly monitored by the News Broadcasters Association (NBA). The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has the power to regulate films. The Advertising Council of India regulates advertising.
Petition ..
The Supreme Court last month sought the views of the central government as part of its hearing on a petition filed against the regulation of OTT platforms. The Center has issued Supreme Court notices to the Department of Communications, Indigenous Internet and Mobile Associations on the issue of regulation of OTT platforms by an independent body. OTT platforms include news portals as well as streaming services such as Hotstar, Netflix, Amazon Prime and video streaming companies. These can be viewed over the Internet or through a network of operators. According to the petitioner, the makers of films and series through OTT or various media platforms are releasing the content without obtaining clearance certificates from the censor board.
